What is Cyberpunk? What makes a great Cyberpunk SciFi Book?

Cyberpunk is an offshoot of the major Science Fiction genre. But it's more than just a book genre. Many cyberpunk enthusiasts view it as a culture as well. You see, as a genre cyberpunk tends to lean towards a higher end of technological advancement such like micro processing and advanced computing capabilities. This is very much different than say... Steampunk--which relies heavily on steam powered devices and Victorian England. BUT... that's a different article for a different time.

The setting and environment for these books also tend to gravitate towards a central theme. The more urban and dystopia, the better. In many cases, the corporations and conglomerates responsible for the decaying metropolises run rampant with corruption and vice. Sewn throughout are themes of politics and authoritarianism.

Normally the protagonists fights the powers that be. Instead of heroes, in Cyberpunk you find rebels, hackers, outsiders, and anti-heroes. Often times, characters in the realm of cyberpunk are equipped with Cybernetic enhancements as well. These being technological and biological enhancements to the human body. Cyborgs are relatively commonplace in the Cyberpunk genre.

Cyberpunk is not without its own sub-genres as well. Most notably are Biopunk and Post-Cyberpunk. Biopunk is geared more towards biological tech such as genetic manipulation and gene splicing. A prime example of this is Gattaca. Although biopunk tends to lack some of the cybernetic aspects of the Main Cyberpunk, it holds very true to the level of tech/quality of life inverse relationship standard of the genre. Thus... Cyberpunk. Post-Cyberpunk, on the other hand, is a modern interpretation of previous Cyberpunk works that focused on envisioned qualities of 80's inspired Cyberpunk. Post Cyberpunk follows more along the lines of trans-humanism and space travel.

The Origins of Cyberpunk

Ask Cyberpunk fans who the creator of Cyberpunk is and many will answer: William Gibson. And while Gibson is the author most associated with the Cyberpunk genre (Book #2 on our list-Neuromancer), the phrase "Cyberpunk" was coined many years earlier by Bruce Bethke. Bruce actually published a short story titled Cyberpunk in Amazing Stories in 1983. One whole year prior to Gibson's breakout debut novel.

But to get down to it... The premise for Cyberpunk goes back much further than that. One could argue that it has its roots in the New Wave science fiction era of the 1960s and 70s. Authors such as Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, and J.G. Ballard are said to have help establish the foundation that Cyberpunk rests upon today.

Popular Cyberpunk Film and TV Adaptations

One thing that is certain about Cyberpunk is its versatility for the silver screen. Most recently, Ready Player One was adapted into a major motion picture under the guiding hand of the great Steven Spielberg. But that's just one example. Ripley Scott's Blade Runner in 1982 has become a cult classic. And let's not forget The Matrix Trilogy... But the theater is not the only place Cyberpunk has seen success. Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan has become a smash hit on Netflix premiering on February 2, 2018. Netflix has since renewed Altered Carbon's for a second season.
